After graduation

Settlement (ILR) and citizenship — the realistic timeline

How time in the UK counts toward Indefinite Leave to Remain, which routes qualify, and what happens between the Graduate visa and citizenship.

The answer in 60 seconds

  • Time on a Student visa and on the Graduate visa does not normally count toward settlement.
  • The clock usually starts when you move onto a route that leads to settlement, such as Skilled Worker.
  • Settlement rules, qualifying periods and English/Life in the UK requirements change — confirm the current position on GOV.UK before planning around dates.

How the clock works

Indefinite Leave to Remain is granted after a continuous qualifying period on a qualifying route, with limits on absences from the UK and requirements on English language and the Life in the UK test.

Because Student and Graduate time generally does not count, the practical plan is: study, use the Graduate visa to secure a sponsored role, then accumulate qualifying time on that route.

Absences and continuity

Long trips home can break continuous residence. Keep a record of every departure and return from the day your qualifying route starts.

Citizenship after ILR

Naturalisation as a British citizen is a separate application made after holding settled status for a qualifying period, with its own residence, good character and knowledge requirements. India does not permit dual citizenship, so consider the OCI implications before applying.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming study years count toward settlement.
  • Exceeding permitted absences during the qualifying period.
  • Planning citizenship dates without checking Indian nationality consequences.
