What a UK student month actually costs

Rent, travel, groceries and the hidden costs nobody mentions before you land.

Budgeting from India is hard because the visible costs — tuition and rent — are the easy ones. It is the recurring small spends that break a monthly plan.

Build your budget around four buckets: housing, travel, food and one flexible bucket for everything else. Keep the flexible bucket honest; it is where phone plans, laundry, course materials and social life live.

Council tax is usually exempt for full-time students, but you must apply for the exemption. Travel is cheaper with a 16-25 Railcard and a student bus pass in most cities.

Part-time work is capped during term time. Plan your income around the cap, not around your best week.
